“First Lady” Kristy Pike, Dr. Sharon Richens and Jodi Bracken will add their “notes of hope” to the AAUW St. George Scholarship Gala’s “Night of Inspiration” Nov. 5 at the Abbey Inn on Bluff Street.
They join Pat Jones, a member of the Utah Board of Regents, successful businesswoman and a Utah legislator for 14 years, who will emphasize the importance of women earning leadership roles. She will be introduced by DSU President Richard “Biff” Williams.
“FloSt” Pike brings humor, energy and investment in her roles as mother, businesswoman, proactive community service and undiscovered poet to the stage. She will be introduced by her husband, St. George Mayor Jon Pike.
Dr. Richens has earned an enviable professional reputation in her ophthalmic medical specialty as well as local recognition for her active community involvement since opening her practice here in 2001.
Jodi Bracken, single mother and student at DSU, will represent this year’s 34 recipients in the unusual AAUW scholarship program now in its 36th year.
The program emphasizes “character and determination as much as academics and need,” according to Lysa McCarroll, president of the St. George AAUW branch, largest in the state. “We can’t underwrite a complete post-high school education but we try to tell young girls, or women who had their education interrupted, that we believe they can do it and we will stick with them as best we can as long as they stick with it. The rewards are there for those who do and for their family and community.”
The Gala offers dinner, entertainment and open and silent auctions. Co-sponsors include: Jones Waldo, The Spectrum, Red Mountain Spa, Red Stone Olive Oil Company, The Travel Connection and Town & Country Bank. All proceeds go to the scholarship fund.
Tickets are $75 and are available only at aauw-stgeorge.org/gala. Seating is limited and reservations must be made by October 31.
