Reality Stores is a project AAUW St. George member volunteers have supported for many years!
Students in ninth grade in the Washington County School District are given an identity which includes a profession, monthly income, marital status, and one or more children. Students then come to the “stores” to acquire housing, transportation, food, clothing furniture, medical treatment, insurance, investments, etc., all the kinds of things we in the adult world confront on a daily basis.
We, as volunteers, are there to assist the students in getting the things they need, to provide advice, and in some cases help students with the necessary math skills to keep a check book ledger. This is a fun way to get to know young adults in the community and to enjoy watching how they think and reason. The activity is a true “welcome to the real world” for these young adults!
